On The Surface is a group of local textile artists who have worked together for some five years. Our creative interests and talents have often had to play second fiddle to our daytime jobs, families and other commitments but working together has given us structure, discipline and motivation. Although as individuals we work in very different ways, collectively we encourage and learn from one another using diverse techniques and skills. Often taking a thematic approach as a group, we all approach our individual work from different angles, common focuses would be texture, colour, pattern and stitch.
Featuring both three and two dimensional work, recent themes have incorporated nature and memory; contrasting the colours and textures of the natural world with the shadows and shades of times gone by. Challenged to find new and different approaches and media, we have explored stitching into and with both natural and synthetic materials and so have pieces which use tree bark and foliage whilst others are constructed from bubble wrap and all manner of string.
We welcome the chance to talk with visitors and will be offering a chance to make a bowl from silk fibres during the first weekend of the exhibition.
