Longer Description:

Neil Hotchin is a potter based in the Old Print Works in Balsall Heath, where he first learnt to make pots on a wheel as a member of Sundragon Community Pottery. Some of his work is fired in a conventional electric kiln and some of those pots will be on show. However, his real passion is firing pots traditional wood-fired anagama-style kilns. Anagama kilns date back to 5th century Japan and the basic design remains unchanged, with a firebox at one end and a chimney at the other. Firing of the kiln is a team effort and is physically demanding - the kiln requires constant attention and the firing can last anywhere from 2 to 10 days, with temperatures reaching 1300C or more. In such a harsh environment, the outcome is never predictable and failures are commonplace but when everything comes together, the results can be magical with the wood ash melting on the surface of the pot to form a glaze.
